You can go live on YouTube from a volleyball match using just your phone, a free streaming app and VolleyDesk for live scores. Here is the complete setup.
Any modern Android or iPhone with a decent camera. Mount it on a tripod at the end of the court, slightly elevated.
Free streaming app for Android and iOS. Supports overlays, multiple scenes, YouTube direct streaming. No computer needed.
The referee scores on VolleyDesk. The system generates a live score overlay URL for your stream — score bug updates automatically.
A 3–4 hour stream will drain the phone battery. Keep a power bank connected during the stream or use a cable to a wall socket.
Before the tournament, create a free account at volleydesk.eu and set up your tournament. When you create the match or tournament, VolleyDesk generates a unique stream overlay URL.
This URL is a browser page that shows only the score bug — team names, current score and set count on a transparent background. You will use this as a web layer in Prism Live Studio.
The referee enters scores on their own device. The overlay updates automatically within one second.
Download Prism Live Studio (free, no subscription required for basic use). Connect your YouTube account in the app settings. Create a new broadcast and select YouTube as the destination.
The camera layer is the main video source — your phone's camera pointing at the court. Position the phone on a tripod at one end of the court, about 3–4 meters high if possible, angled to cover the full court. Landscape mode, camera layer covering the full frame.
In Prism Live Studio, add a "Web" layer. Paste the VolleyDesk overlay URL. Resize and position the score bug — typically bottom-left or bottom-center of the frame. The overlay has a transparent background so only the score graphic appears over the video.
VolleyDesk's overlay can include team names in the score bug. You can also add static text layers in Prism for additional graphics like the tournament name or date.
Once the camera is in position and the overlay is configured, go live in Prism Live Studio. The stream starts on your YouTube channel. Share the YouTube link in the team group chat before the match starts.
From this point, the referee enters scores on their VolleyDesk panel. Each point updates the score bug on the stream within one second — no second operator needed.
The only thing to monitor during the match is the camera position (does it still cover the full court after timeouts?) and the battery level. Keep the power bank connected from the start.
If the stream disconnects, Prism will usually reconnect automatically. The score overlay resumes from the current live score when the stream restarts.
For higher-quality streams, connect a camcorder or mirrorless camera via HDMI to a laptop running OBS Studio. In OBS, add the VolleyDesk overlay as a Browser Source using the same overlay URL. This setup gives you better zoom, image quality and the ability to switch scenes. However, for most club and school tournaments, the phone-only setup is sufficient and significantly easier to set up.
What if the gym Wi-Fi is unreliable?
Use mobile data (4G/5G) on the streaming phone. Create a hotspot from a second phone if needed. A stable connection of at least 5 Mbps upload is enough for a 720p stream.
Can I stream to Facebook instead of YouTube?
Yes. Prism Live Studio supports Facebook Live, YouTube, and other RTMP destinations. The VolleyDesk overlay works the same way regardless of the streaming destination.
Does the score update automatically or do I need to type it?
The score updates automatically. The referee enters each point on their VolleyDesk panel. The overlay pulls from the live data — you never need to type a score manually.
Do I need a paid VolleyDesk plan to use the stream overlay?
No. The stream overlay is included in the free plan.
What resolution should I stream at?
720p (1280×720) at 30fps is a good default for phone streaming. It requires about 4–5 Mbps upload. 1080p is possible on good connections but puts more load on the phone and upload bandwidth.
